Young Producers Spotlight: Wheathin

With vanishing barriers to entry in electronic music, producers are now unburdened by their age. At only 15 years old, Ethan Snoreck, better known as Wheathin, has captured the ears of thousands with his scintillating chords and punchy percussion. Ethan’s recent remix of “XE3” by Mssingno garnered him over 25 thousand plays on soundcloud, positioning him as an artist to watch. Melisma caught up with Wheathin to discuss his inspiration and aspirations.

When did you first start producing?

I first started producing 2 years ago using apps on my iPad. I got into electronic music when I saw artists like Skrillex who at the time made music that was really interesting and different. I’ve never heard anything like dubstep and wanted to make music myself. I made music under my name Ethan Snoreck for a year and about 5 months ago created the “Wheathin” project to try to do something different because I fell out of love of house music.

Wheathin is a pretty interesting name for an artist. What’s the story behind it?

The name Wheathin came from a friend at school who was looking for a nickname for my name Ethan and just started saying random words. Wheathin was one of those words and it caught my ear. To prove to him and a few classmates I could actaully produce music I did a remix to the Wheat Thin Commercial “Must Have Wheat Thins” and they loved it. The name stuck and people still call me Wheathin at school.

Where do you find musical inspiration, both within and outside the electronic music scene?

Inside of electronic music my inspiration comes from artists like Flume, Ganz, Hayden James, Mssingno and believe it or not alternative artist Banks. Outside of electronic music my inspiration can come from the sports I play. I play hockey so I’m always trying to think what would sound good before a game or during a game. I want to create a chilling pleasure that can get you pumped.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the world right now, who would it be?

If I could collaborate with anyone it would by far be Flume. He is the most inspiring artist to me and always finds a way to change his style to keep his sound evolving. He could easily keep using the same sounds he’s used in other songs but he always changes his sounds to keep his music interesting.

Do your classmates know about your production talent? How have people around you reacted to your music?

My close friends know my music very well. Most people who know of me know I make music but they don’t really pay attention to or follow Wheathin. They have listened to maybe one song but nothing more.

Do you have any words of advice for other producers around your age?

One tip for producers around my age would be to make your own sounds. Be very creative with your synths. It’s very easy to do something thats already being or been done. It’ important to do something very different and make you stand out from everyone else.
