Baby Tate at House of Blues 4/20

I fumbled my bag as I half-ran, half-walked to the press pit, frantically putting on my press sticker and assembling my camera. Baby Tate had already started her set, but I had only just been let into the venue. I jogged into the press area and was greeted by a security guard who simply pointed to the press pit. I quickly tossed my bag in a corner and got right to work.

I was really excited to see Baby Tate perform, as I really liked her features on Childish Major’s “Check” and JID’s “Surround Sound,” but I had unfortunately already missed parts of her set. Regardless, I could tell that she had put on a great performance right from the beginning of her set. Strutting her way across the stage, Baby Tate truly put her heart and soul into her performance. Starting off with her off-the-wall banger “Pedi,” she transitioned this perfectly into another high-energy track: “Rainbow Cadillac,” from her latest release, After The Rain.

Right after this came an unreleased song titled “Differences.” On this bass heavy song, Baby Tate confidently rapped before beautifully singing the bridge that led into an epic outro. Then, she treated us to the then unreleased “Yasss Queen.” This melodic trap-influenced bop was a pleasant change of pace and a delight to hear ahead of its release.

Other highlights of her performance included the other song that was part of her latest double single, the trap banger “Dancing Queen,” and the pair of tracks on the last double single, the smooth R&B cut “What’s Love” and the sexy and raunchy “Sl*t Him Out.” “Eenie Meenie” found itself in the middle of all of these to give After The Rain some more representation on the setlist. Closing out with her biggest hit “I Am,” she left the crowd with some awesome energy and it set up very well for Charli XCX’s stellar set.

Since the show, I’ve been getting into more of Baby Tate’s music – if I were you, I would definitely keep an eye out for her in the future.
